Rangefinder Review

A key step in the development of scorer training materials is Rangefinder Review meetings, where educators and administrators from states meet to interpret the scoring rubrics and determine consensus scores for student responses. Rangefinder Review meetings are held prior to scoring operational items.

Rangefinder Review attendees review operational scorer training sets and approve them. The operational training sets are based on the field test sets with scores that were approved by Rangefinding committees. Operational sets have additional responses and formal annotations to explain score points added to the original field test sets. Rangefinder Review committees approve scores on any added papers and approve the content of annotations. If any materials are not approved during the in-person meeting, Pearson sends the sets to a Rangefinder Review participant for official review and approval.

A Rangefinder Review Room Lead signs off on the approved scores at the in-person meeting. The Room Lead is usually the designated reviewer for any materials that need to be approved after the in-person meeting.

When developing scorer training materials, Pearson Scoring Directors carefully review detailed notes and records from Rangefinder Review committee meetings. Training sets are developed using the responses scored by the committees and additional suitable student response samples (as needed). All scorer training sets are reviewed and approved prior to scorer training.
